Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean is a 2003 role-playing video game that was developed by tri-Crescendo and Monolith Soft and published by Namco for the Nintendo GameCube. First released in Japan in 2003, it is the first game in the Baten Kaitos series, and takes place after Baten Kaitos Origins, a prequel released in 2006. It tells the story of a young man named Kalas and his companion Xelha, who live in an aerial island-based kingdom in the clouds. The title, Baten Kaitos, comes from Arabic meaning "belly of the sea monster" and is also the name of the star Zeta Ceti.

Problems

Freezes

The game may rarely freeze while displaying photograph magnuses (e.g. in shops and the deck screen, mostly on the first game disc). Disabling Dual Core solves this. If it causes too much slowdown, you can also save the game’s state (Emulation → Save State) prior to selling photographs and reload if a freeze occurred to work around this problem. If it happens in the loot screen when selecting a photograph, untick "Synchronize GPU thread".

With Virtual XFB (Enabled by Default) the screen rapidly flips. To solve disable XFB (Real XFB crashes after logos) before opening the game then open graphics settings. Only happens on PAL version. Fixed sometime before 5.0.

Enhancements

Widescreen Gecko Code

The Widescreen hack included with Dolphin causes balancing issues with the background that this Gecko Code will solve. Make sure to leave the Widescreen Hack included with Dolphin disabled.

Testing

This title has been tested on the environments listed below:

Test Entries
Revision OS CPU GPU Result Tester
3.0 Windows 7 AMD Phenom II X4 955 @ 3.2GHz ATI Radeon HD 5770 Fullspeed, random crashes.
3.0 Windows 7 Intel Core i7-2670QM @ 2.2GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M Fullspeed, runs perfect. Phazon Lord
r7624 Ubuntu 10.04 AMD Phenom II X3 720 NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Running 2x Native Resolution, 2x AA, 4x AF @ 75-100%. Game looks great. Can't speak to the crash listed above, but from what I've played it is working well. keller999
3.5 Mac OS X 10.6.8 Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.66GHz NVIDIA GeForce 320M Runs great (with slowdowns due to low specs).
3.5 Mac OS X 10.8.4 Intel Core i7-4650U Intel HD5000 Fullspeed at 2x IR 16x AF, no AA, vsync. Rare slowdowns where holding TAB helps. Verix
3.5-1389 openSUSE AMD Phenom II X4 955 NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT Runs mostly fine except for the photograph magnus crashes (which seem to occur only on the first game disc). Performance is not as good as it should be (drops down to 75% or less at times); graphics and DSP settings appear to have absolutely no influence on that though.
4.0.1 Windows 7 AMD Phenom II X4 960T @ 3GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Fullspeed, runs incredibly well with very little audio/graphic issues. Very minimal lag in areas with water or during transition animations into battle. Graphics setup used (all others unchecked): Backend (Direct3D9), Fullscreen resolution (Auto), Aspect Ratio (Auto), IR (Auto/Multiple of 640x528), No Anti-Aliasing, Anisotropic Filtering x1, Scaled EFB Copy, Ignore Format Changes, EFB Copies=Texture, Texture Cache-Fast, External Frame Buffer=Disabled, and Fast Depth Calculation. For audio, DSP HLE emulation with default settings (i.e no DSPLLE on Seperate Thread, no Dump Audio, etc) LaDestitute
4.0-1340 Windows 7 Intel Core i7-3770K NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti The game runs flawlessly using the default .ini configuration override that Dolphin includes. There are some very minor slow downs in certain areas with mirrors and water, going from full speed (30FPS) to 25-28FPS. The game can run with Dual Core enabled, if I remember correctly, interacting with picture magnus in the menus are really laggy.
5.0-174 Windows 10 Intel Core i7-4790K NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 The game runs fullspeed with default config on OpenGL, DX11 and DX12. The game doesn't slowdown with Dual Core Enabled during shops and with picture magnus(at least for me) anymore, thus it can be safely enabled by default. The game doesn't "flip at startup" with EFB enabled anymore either(for me at least), thus that setting can also be enabled from start. Fenrir
