Resident Evil 4, known in Japan as Biohazard 4 (バイオハザード4 Baiohazādo Fō), is a survival horror video game developed by Capcom Production Studio 4 and published by Capcom and Nintendo for the Nintendo GameCube. The story follows Leon S. Kennedy, who is sent on a mission to rescue Ashley Graham, the President's daughter, who has been kidnapped by a mysterious cult. Traveling to a rural village in Europe, he encounters a horde of violent villagers who pledge their lives to the cult.

Unlike previous games in the series, Resident Evil 4 has stronger focus on combat, with many more enemies to deal with. As such, it uses a new third person, over the shoulder combat system for easier aiming. Other changes to the game include context sensitive actions to interact with the environment, and quick-time event cutscenes.

RE4 was ported to the Wii with Resident Evil 4: Wii edition, with new Wii Remote based aiming controls and extra content from other platforms.

Problems

Intro Text Rendering

The line "Six years later" at the intro doesn't appear correctly (by three letters instead of by one). This can be corrected by setting the texture cache slider to safe.

PerfCounters

This game uses a feature known as PerfCounters. Using emulator features such as savestates can cause this feature to glitch out, making the game run incredibly slow. There is no known solution to this quirk. Restarting the game after a normal save will remedy the slowdown.

Dark Stripes

Some textures like water and Ramon Salazar (boss) may have strange dark stripes on them. To avoid this issue don't set IR to Auto with OpenGL and disable Fast Depth Calculation with Vulkan.

Enhancements

Higher Resolutions

At higher resolutions, certain blur effects will be much weaker. While this doesn't impact the gameplay whatsoever, it can cause some weapons effects to look weaker.

Configuration

Only configuration options for the best compatibility where they deviate from defaults are listed.

Graphics

Config Setting Notes
Video Backend Not OpenGL or Vulkan avoid certain textures rendering incorrectly
Texture Cache Accuracy Safe avoid incorrect rendering of some text

Revision OS CPU GPU Result Tester
r7367 Windows 7 AMD Phenom II 720 BE @ 3.2 GHz ATI Radeon HD 4850 Works good ultramann
3.0 Windows 7 AMD Phenom II 965 Quad-core @ 3.4 GHz AMD Radeon HD 6870 Very minor GFX glitches, rare crashing, 80-100% speed, occasional sound glitches ChaosZeroX
3.0-721 Windows 7 Intel Core i5-750 @ 2.66 GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 Smaller slowdowns in big areas. No crashes so far.
3.0-776 Windows 7 Intel Core i5-2500K @ 3.3 GHz ATI Radeon HD 5870 Some artifacts on the sides of the screen with widescreen hack but looks good. Cannot see through infrared scope. gsilver
3.0-796 Windows 7 Intel Core i7-2600 @ 3.5 GHz NVIDIA GeForce 560 Ti Audio loop problem fixed! RE4 is PERFECT now. (Actual revision is b2a01dc34813) Linear
3.0-811 Mac OS X 10.7.5 Intel Core i7 @ 2.2 GHz AMD Radeon HD 6750M Works pretty well. Frame rate is close to 30FPS most of the time. Audio suffers from some issues (with DSP HLE). Every time a code cache clearing occurs, the framerate permanently drops below 15FPS: I have to close the game and restart it to fix this. Tested with default settings and DSP HLE. Nolendil
3.5 Windows 8 AMD FX-4170 @ 4.2 GHz NVIDIA GeForce 210 The emulator crashes when you start a new game. raidenninjamgs4
4.0-1349 Windows 7 AMD Athlon II X2 255 @ 3.1 GHz AMD Radeon HD 5770 Full framerate (30FPS game) despite slow hardware. Very rare crash when starting new game, no problems noticed after that. Note that the game was made to fake 16:9 on 4:3 TVs, so playing on a 16:9 monitor will result in annoying borders whatever you do. PAL version tested, enable 60Hz mode at the start. pinumbernumber
4.0-2879 Windows 10 Intel Core i5-6200U @ 2.3 GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M 30 FPS ok most of the time. Some slowdown occurs sometimes after loading a new room, but seems random behaviour. When it happens, game speed never come back to 30 FPS, so I must restart to fix. Always crashes in the hall of water, when walking on the yellow right switch, even if it's the first switch activated. So, impossible to play more of the game... Monsieurjplus
4.0-3369 Windows 7 Intel Core i5-2430M @ 2.4 GHz Intel HD Graphics 3000 Perfect 100%, 60FPS using lowest internal resolution, backend Direct3D, XFB enabled to virtual, V-sync disabled, idle skipping disabled, Skip EFB enabled, set your computer to high performance. Talos
5.0 Windows 10 Intel Core i7-870 @ 3.89 GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Over all runs well in 3* Native, with DirectX 12 backend. A few crashes at different points in the game but got past them after 1 or two restarts. I have also noticed my FPS will drop from 30 to 25-27. This happens usually after loading a saved state. It seems best not to load saved state files, or this drop in FPS and cracked audio will start. Do not save the game (in game or save state) if this happens. Restart and make sure the game is running stable before saving or it will save the error too, and run bad from then on. A nice emulation, with very smooth controls. Beastmode1080
