Luigi's Mansion is an action-adventure game developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo GameCube. It was released in Japan on September 14, 2001, in North America on November 17, 2001, and in Europe on May 3, 2002. The game was a launch title for the GameCube. This was one of the very few games where Luigi was the main character, not Mario.
In Luigi's Mansion, Luigi steps out from the shadow of his brother Mario and into the gloomy shadows of a very haunted house in this, his first-ever starring role. When Luigi learns that he's the proud new owner of a creepy old mansion, he's thrilled. Of course, his feelings immediately shift when his brother, the storied Mario, disappears from the house. Now, you'll have to help Luigi track his brother down, making your way through expansive 3D levels. Each stage is packed with ghosts and ghouls to put you on edge; and you'll be armed with a flashlight and a vacuum cleaner to help you capture your foes. Armed with a flashlight and a customized vacuum cleaner, Luigi must rid the mansion of Boos and ghouls — and find his missing brother to boot!

The game takes place in a haunted mansion, which Luigi won in a contest he did not enter. He told his brother to meet him there to celebrate his victory. Luigi is searching for his brother Mario, who came to the mansion earlier, but went missing. To help Luigi on his quest, an old professor named Elvin Gadd has equipped him with the "Poltergust 3000", a vacuum cleaner used for capturing ghosts, and a "Game Boy Horror", a device used for communicating with Gadd.

Luigi's Mansion was relatively well-received by reviewers, despite being criticized for its short length. The game has sold over 2.5 million copies, and is the fifth best-selling Nintendo GameCube game in the United States. It was one of the first games to be re-released as a Player's Choice title on the system. A sequel, Luigi's Mansion 2, was announced at E3 2011 for the Nintendo 3DS.
Corruption of Luigi's Model
In the intro cutscene, Luigi's model will get corrupted if Dual Core is enabled.

The built-in Widescreen Hack causes shadow issues. The following Gecko codes work as a replacement, causing fewer issues. To avoid conflicts, make sure that Widescreen Hack is disabled while using these codes.

<pre>GameBoy Horror Eye Camera 16:9 Aspect Ratio v2 Code Fix [Ralf]
At the beginning of the game, when going upstairs in the dark and going through the next room, the screen might go black and also show silhouette of characters on some hardware. It seems to be fixed in 6706. See also 1985. (Please also update DirectX.)

Sound Problems
60Hz PAL
Constant slight crackling may occur in the background and when enemies and friends make noises. Use DSP LLE to fix them.
In the PAL-Version the 60Hz mode cannot be activated at startup due to the progressive scan option being disabled in the EU version. Use this Gecko code to re-enable it.

M4A Video Codec
HD Texture Pack
Support of the M4A codec required to play the Pikmin movie trailer under options is currently working, but it requires DX9 and DSP-LLE.

Problems

Poltergust 3000 Hose Disappears

In the cutscene where Luigi returns to the villa from Professor E. Gadd's Ghost Research Laboratory, the Hose of Luigi's Poltergust 3000 will keep disappearing. Refer issue 12520.

Corruption of Luigi's Model

In the intro cutscene, Luigi's model will get corrupted if Dual Core is enabled.

Music Sheets Battle Static (Non-Default Setting)

With DSP LLE, there are bursts of static during the Music Sheets battle. See issue 7145.

Rumble

Gamepad rumble does not work properly. Refer issue 10316. Fixed in 5.0-6899.

Mario Portrait Blur

The blurry effect on Mario's picture in King Boo's Hall is not emulated properly. Refer issue 11462. Fixed in 5.0-14120.

Enhancements

16:9 Widescreen Gecko Code

The built-in Widescreen Hack causes shadow issues. The following Gecko codes work as a replacement, causing fewer issues. To avoid conflicts, make sure that Widescreen Hack is disabled while using these codes.

3.0-151 Windows Vista Intel Pentium P6100 @ 2 GHz Intel HD graphics Works normally and fully playable but the graphics is all pixelated. To get a rid from the pixels is needed to change the resolution to 1280x720.
3.0-221 Windows 7 Intel Core i7-2620M @ 2.7 GHz Intel HD 3000 Close to perfect. Do not run in DX9 or OpenGL for it will crash or have black-screen. Running at 720P at 30FPS consistently. No hitches with game play but use DX11 for Intel HD Graphics. No slowing down during boss fights either. Also running on a laptop. cohn
3.0-235 Windows 7 AMD Phenom II X6 @ 3.2 GHz AMD Radeon HD 5750 Perfect, but normal settings caused weird graphical problems. The screen seemed to have purple EFB problems. Disabling EFB turned them black. Checking "Ignore Format Changes" got rid of them.
