Luigi's Mansion is an action-adventure game developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo GameCube. It was released in Japan on September 14, 2001, in North America on November 17, 2001, and in Europe on May 3, 2002. The game was a launch title for the GameCube. This was one of the very few games where Luigi was the main character, not Mario.

The game takes place in a haunted mansion, which Luigi won in a contest he did not enter. He told his brother to meet him there to celebrate his victory. Luigi is searching for his brother Mario, who came to the mansion earlier, but went missing. To help Luigi on his quest, an old professor named Elvin Gadd has equipped him with the "Poltergust 3000", a vacuum cleaner used for capturing ghosts, and a "Game Boy Horror", a device used for communicating with Gadd.

Luigi's Mansion was relatively well-received by reviewers, despite being criticized for its short length. The game has sold over 2.5 million copies, and is the fifth best-selling Nintendo GameCube game in the United States. It was one of the first games to be re-released as a Player's Choice title on the system.

Problems

No Shadows

Shadows are missing, significantly reducing the ambiance of many scenes.

Black Screen

At the beginning of the game, when going upstairs in the dark and go through the next room, the screen might go black and also show silhouette of characters on some hardware. It seems to be fixed in r6706. See also issue 1985.

Sound Problems

You may hear constant slight crackling in the background and when enemies and friends make noises.

M4A Video Codec

Support of the M4A codec required to play the Pikmin movie trailer under options is currently flaky, refer issue 119. With r6658 the trailer can be played /w the US release using DX9 and LLE Audio.

The trailer has been reported to work in r4495 (and possibly prior/later revs) with the JITiL recompiler, and in r6319 forward. At least with r6658 the trailer can only be played with the US release using the DX9 and LLE Audio plug-ins, the EU release hangs regardless of plug-in combination.

OpenGL Plug-in

Use of the OpenGL plug-in (/w r6658) results in a crash post the initial menu screen.

Configuration

No configuration changes are known to affect compatibility for this title.
