MediaWiki talk:Anonnotice
Allow Single Line Display
We should revise the style here to allow the two boxes to display horizontally if space allows. They take up a lot of vertical space other wise.Kolano (talk) 21:56, 16 January 2015 (CET)
Outdated link
The Progress Report link is outdated on Anonnotice but not on Sitenotice. This could be solved indefinitely by replacing the first textbox with {{MediaWiki:Sitenotice}} . I opened them side by side and they look the same to me.--2A02:582:7C57:8900:D9E5:C359:DEF5:D16C 13:39, 25 July 2017 (CEST)
- Yes, thanks. We need to work out some automation for the link in the main notice to avoid it getting outdated. Kolano (talk) 02:42, 26 July 2017 (CEST)
Link Account Creation Pages in Notice
When joining the wiki I found it unclear how to create an account and obtain edit rights. I think the notice should link to the account creation page and the forum topic for requesting edit rights, perhaps something like this:

Thoughts? I can't make the change myself, so would appreciate a response. OceanIsEndless (talk) 22:13, 30 March 2026 (CEST)
- This banner is a relic of the past (hasn't been touched in nearly a decade) and I'm more inclined in dropping it altogether than to make further changes. Regarding the discoverability of the forum thread, it's kept low on purpose. We had major spam problems in the past and that's what triggered the manual approval mode currently in place. The barrier of entry for the wiki is a bit high, I agree, but as long as you ask in any of our community channels (forum, Discord, Reddit, etc.), someone can direct you to the proper place and procedures to get editing rights here. - mbc07 (talk) 08:22, 31 March 2026 (CEST)
- I'm less sure about this. We may want to reconsider given the new bot check systems in place if this obscurity is still needed. Though I'm probably a bit biased, since I'm stuck with the current approvals. That banner would need some updates to what's presented above, since it's still pretty vague. - The bot check systems were added to reduce unneeded server load, it didn't move the needle regarding to spam prevention. I mean, nowadays we still get at least 3 new accounts registered almost daily, compared to the number of people who actually ask for editing rights in the forum thread (a very small fraction), I can only presume the rest are spam accounts that get stuck on a dead end, without edit rights. If we start linking the actual forum thread where you can get editing rights on a banner that's shown in every single page (if you're not logged in), I can only picture this situation getting even worse. With that said, I'd:
- • Drop the banner altogether. It feels out of place and hasn't been updated in ages.
- • If we still want to explicitly link the forum thread and how to get edit rights, we could add that to MediaWiki:Signupstart, MediaWiki:Signupend or other related system messages, that way we only expose the instructions on Special:CreateAccount and nowhere else.
- • Also, since we're touching this subject, we could ping OatmealDome about installing something like Extension:ConfirmAccount or leveraging SessionManager/AuthManager to do the heavy lifting for us (e.g. auto granting editing rights for logins made with a forum account, as the spam countermeasures we have in place on MyBB seems more effective than MediaWiki's). It'd require more work, of course, but if properly implemented it would at least alleviate the burden on you.
