Super Smash Bros. Melee, known in Japan as Great Melee Smash Brothers Deluxe (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズDX, Dairantō Sumasshu Burazāzu Derakkusu), often abbreviated as SSBM or simply as Melee, is a crossover fighting game released for the Nintendo GameCube shortly after its launch in 2001.

Like its predecessor, Super Smash Bros. Melee differs from traditional fighting games in that inflicting the most damage does not guarantee victory. Instead, opposing players must inflict damage to add to the opponents percentage, to make them lighter, then force their opponents beyond the boundaries of the stage. Unlike other games of the same genre, in which moves are entered by button-input combinations, most moves in Super Smash Bros. Melee can be accessed via one-button presses and a joystick direction.

In addition to highly refining the gameplay of Super Smash Bros., Melee also sports additional stages and characters, and an expanded single player mode, called "Adventure Mode". The game also introduced many of the staples of its sequel, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Melee received universal acclaim from critics, and went on to become the best selling GameCube game of all time.

Problems

Minor sound glitches

Random sound glitches may occur when using the DSP HLE audio engine. Glitches include the right or left channels cutting out, music stopping, or various crackling noises. The error is random, and its severity depends on the specific revision. Use the DSP LLE audio engine to avoid this.

The music glitches will always end when a new music track is played; so any music problems will end with the current fight, when leaving the menus, or when another track is played in the sound test. Various in game work-arounds include: Pausing the match for a few seconds, returning to the title screen, changing the music or sound in the Sound Test.

Minor Video/Audio Timing Bug

The video/audio of cut-scenes are about 1 second out of sync r7564. This is however not the case with actual gameplay. A fix for this is to use Auto for the framerate, check the "Use FPS for Limiting" and uncheck "Enable Audio Throttle". Setting this however, causes the game speed to exceed 100% in many cases throughout the game.

VS. Team Battle

Incorrect overlay effect for VS Team ... (Stage 8) in Classic Mode. In melee's classic mode, the versus team battles are against a large group of clones. To show this, melee rapidly add each version of the character to the right hand pane of the screen, building up till all the versions are shown. Dolphin shows this incorrectly, only showing one at a time, with the newest addition covering the previous. Furthermore, Dolphin has a black background in the right hand pane, instead of the proper bluish background in the left pane.
