YouTube Embed Options

Lately, I have been kind of disliking my uploads of File:Super Mario Galaxy Boss Roar Wrong.png and File:Super Mario Galaxy 2 Boss Roar Wrong.png because I don't think they are demonstrating the bug well. I wanted to use YouTube videos instead. The problem is that the videos are too long and start at 0:00 where the bug doesn't exist at that point. There is a solution to this problem and that is parameters for embedded YouTube videos. For example:

What do you guys think? Should the template be edited to allow for this? I tried to specify this in the existing template and it has errors. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 21:02, 23 November 2015 (CET)

As far as I searched, EmbedVideo extension allow including more parameters in its recent versions, but we're using version 1.0 where that's not possible. In other words, it's not just a matter of modifying the template, the extension needs to be updated first. I'll contact Parlane about that... - mbc07 (talk) 02:06, 24 November 2015 (CET)
Cool. That sounds good. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 03:15, 24 November 2015 (CET)
I think the EmbedVideo plug-in has been updated because now videos that are on pages display in 16:9 instead of the older 4:3. Should this template be updated to take advantage of the new parameters? --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 21:25, 24 November 2015 (CET)
You can try, but the template may still need to be modified. Also please use {{VideoGallery}}, as we had purged out all the direct usage of these site specific templates a while ago. They probably should be purged out, but I was unclear if they were used under the covers of {{VideoGallery}}. Kolano (talk) 22:47, 24 November 2015 (CET)
I just copypasta from Sonic Adventure 2: Battle as someone else edited that in. Also I am unsure if the {{VideoGallery}} would break the one found in the Gameplay Videos section of each article. You will need to update the {{EmbedVideo}} documentation, {{YouTube}}, and {{VideoGallery}} code to allow for additional parameters. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 23:40, 24 November 2015 (CET)
Just a heads up, Parlane was super quick, in less than 10 minutes after I mailed him the extension were updated. About the new styling, AFAIK modifying {{YouTube}} and related templates is sufficient to reflect the changes in {{VideoGallery}}, gonna do that soon... - mbc07 (talk) 02:24, 25 November 2015 (CET)
Let me know if and when the optional parameters are working (rel, start, and end for example for YouTube URLs). I would edit it myself but seeing how this is an officially established and used template, not going to chance it. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 03:16, 25 November 2015 (CET)

mbc07, I'd presume Wildgoosespeeder recent swap from {{YouTube}} to {{VideoGallery}} was related to my commentary above. In the past I had already swapped out almost all of the videos to use {{VideoGallery}}. That way there is only one template for end users to become familiar with. There are currently only 3 pages using {{YouTube}} that I must have missed being added since I had transitioned everything to {{VideoGallery}}. I'm unclear on your commentary there, currently in problem videos and video gallery videos are formatted in the same way. Did you have some plan to revise the formatting of the video gallery ones?

Here are the 3 pages using it:

That is correct Kolano. I was correcting my mistake. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 04:58, 25 November 2015 (CET)
Well, {{VideoGallery}} currently depends of {{YouTube}} (and related templates for other services) I think, I don't remember if we defined this somewhere but I would completely avoid using {{VideoGallery}} outside of the Gameplay Videos section, when including videos in Problems we generally won't have more than 2 videos (broken/accurate behavior) and while calling {{VideoGallery}} would provide the same output in those cases it would also "consume" some loops (there's a limited number of loops allowed to run in a page) and variables without any benefit (and since I hadn't revised {{VideoGallery}} to use unique variables it may cause issues when it's called twice, in Problems and Gameplay Videos sections, but I haven't investigated this edge case yet).
In other words, {{VideoGallery}} is a somewhat "expensive" template and its additional features (like random thumbnails) aren't necessary when putting videos in problems sections, so it's not worth consuming more resources for something we won't need in that particular section. And about formatting, my long-term goal is having both templates independent, right now they look the same but in future we may want to change the formatting of the Video Gallery without affecting Problems section or vice-versa. I also find our current video templates somewhat messy scattered all the way in different templates (it looked a good way to go when I implemented this initially but it looks very messy even to me now that I'm regretting doing that way in the past), I want to somehow reduce all video templates we currently have into only two, probably {{Video}} for single videos that we would generally use in Problems section or anywhere else and {{VideoGallery}}, for the Gameplay Videos section with its added features like random thumbnails, while also keeping the two independent and keeping usage of the two as similar as possible (for end-users)... - mbc07 (talk) 05:09, 25 November 2015 (CET)
Reverted to using {{YouTube}} for them. The generic {{Video}} template would be preferable.Kolano (talk) 07:00, 25 November 2015 (CET)
So if I have this straight, {{YouTube}} for problems and {{VideoGallery}} for gameplay videos? --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 09:12, 25 November 2015 (CET)
