The game was created by the creator of the Final Fantasy series, Hironobu Sakaguchi. Nintendo and Mistwalker both sought to create "a new form of RPG by choosing the universal theme of human emotion". It was released in Japan on January 27, 2011, and has been confirmed for release in Europe in 2012.
