The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, released as The Legend of Zelda: Baton of Wind (ゼルダの伝説 風のタクト Zeruda no Densetsu: Kaze no Takuto) in Japan, is an action-adventure game and the tenth installment in The Legend of Zelda series.

The game is set on a group of islands in a vast sea—a first for the series. The player controls Link, the protagonist of the Zelda series, as he struggles to find his sister and save the world from Ganondorf.

The Wind Waker follows in the footsteps of Ocarina of Time and its sequel Majora's Mask, retaining the basic gameplay and control system from the two Nintendo 64 titles. A heavy emphasis is placed on using and controlling wind with a baton called the Wind Waker, which aids sailing and floating in air. Though controversial during development for its use of cel shading graphics and the cartoon Link character, The Wind Waker was met with positive reception.

Patches

16:9 Aspect Ratio Fix

The game normally culls certain objects outside the edges of the screen to save processing power. The widescreen hack forces the game to render in a wider aspect ratio, but the camera's aspect ratio remains unchanged, so objects near the edges of the screen are culled. Use the following AR Codes in the place of the widescreen hack to achieve widescreen with fewer problems (although some of the bugs below are fixed, the bugs reappear if the normal widescreen hack is used). Remember to turn on "Enable cheats" and use the "Force 16:9" Aspect Ratio. Note that this does not unstretch any 2D elements such as the HUD.

NTSC
D3MC-RD04-JACXK
G1N3-CXH2-TMF6K
PAL
KNVC-VY59-WXF91
FM7X-QJAM-48NGB

21:9 Aspect Ratio Fix

Like the 16:9 fix, this forces the game to render in a 21:9 aspect ratio. This fix is almost identical to the above fix, but there are minor changes; first, you must make sure to disable the normal widescreen hack. Input the code in your AR Codes. You must also set your fullscreen resolution to a 21:9 resolution (2560x1080 or 3440x1440). Finally, select "Stretch to Window" option for Aspect Ratio. Like the 16:9 fix, this does not unstretch 2D elements.

This fix is from theWiiRd Code Database and was submitted by CosmoCortney.

Problems

Sound Problems

Since 4.0-1300, sound and music will no longer count out with DSP HLE, and the Jingle hangs are gone. However various volume and pitch issues remain. Use DSP LLE for perfect audio.

Game Boy Player

GBA Link is partially emulated since r6059 and requires a dump of GBA BIOS and VBA-M with joy bus options. Unfortunately, in Wind Waker it tends not to detect the GBA at all and will ask you to disconnect it if it even gets that far.

Pink Water Highlights at Night

Various pools and ponds will have pink highlights at night. See issue 3313. Fixed with merger of tev_fixes_new in 4.0-1192.

Black/Gray Screens

A black/gray screen crash may occur after certain events in the game. To fix them use DSP LLE. Fixed by 4.0-1300.

Dragon Roost Heat Effect

The heat effect in Dragon Roost displays incorrectly, creating odd tears in the screen. Fixed as of 4.0-593. Older versions of Dolphin can use the workarounds below.

  • The following Action Replay code disable the fullscreen heat effect in the Dragon Roost areas. Be sure in the general config page to enable cheats, otherwise this won't work. Use the code that matches your version.
    • NTSC (GZLE01) - 003F6B2A 00000000
    • PAL (GZLP01) - 003FE32A 00000000
  • The glitches can be fixed by enabling free look and zooming in the camera significantly until the heat effects are behind the camera. This is performed by enabling Freelook in the Graphics -> Advanced menu, then holding Shift-W to zoom in past the effect. This will effectively fix the heat distortions, and breaks fewer effects in the game than disabling EFB outright; however it can cause other problems such as flickering, and can take some trial and error to position the camera at the ideal spot. Use Shift-R to restore the camera to normal.

See issue 2338.

Fire Effect Doubling

The fire effect is glitched, resulting in an odd doubling of portions of the screen exposed to the effect. Fixed as of 4.0-593, details of the fix are available in the An Old Problem Meets Its Timely Demise blog post. Older versions of Dolphin can use the workaround below.

  • Using this custom texture for NTSC, the doubling effect can be removed. Extract to "Dolphin\User\Load\Textures". Be sure to check Load Custom Textures in the advanced graphics config & set "Texture Cache Accuracy" to position 1 (Safe). To get this fix to work in other versions, change the GameID for the folder and the texture from "GZLE01" (NTSC), to "GZLP01" (PAL) or "GZLJ01" (Japan).

Configuration

Only configuration options for the best compatibility where they deviate from defaults are listed.

r3972 Windows 7 x64 Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.2GHz nVidia GeForce GTX 285 The game is running at 1920x1200 resolution with 16xAF and 8xCSAA. Fraps takes a tremendous chunk out of performance. While recording I was getting about 18-25 fps in game, while playing without recording I get normally 25-30 depending on how many creatures are on the screen. If you can I strongly recommend overclocking your CPU as much as safely possible to play games on Dolphin. I suggest never using Idle Skipping, Framelimit should be off, and use Optimize Quantizers for this game. Dual Core is a huge plus. Always have "Enable safe texture cache" checked. Your graphics card will determine how high a resolution and what levels of AF or AA you can run. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - Dolphin SVN3972 x64 (HD) darkl3ad3r

Sometimes when there is much on the screen or some areas are shown VPS go down to 40, otherwise gameplay is not affected = 50/60 FPS (PAL/NTSC). Flickers in lava levels are looking like screen errors because the seem to be rendered very hard. Thundereus
3.0 Windows 7 x64 AMD Phenom II 1055T @ 3.5GHz AMD Radeon HD 6870 Plays great full 30 FPS @1080p with DX9. DSP LLE fixes most sound issues. Speed up disk transfer rate also improves load times. CORRUPTED
3.0 Windows 7 x64 AMD Phenom II X4 965 @ 3.4GHz nVidia GeForce GT 220 Runs at 30±3 FPS at 1600x900 with default Dolphin configuration except by setting Internal Resolution to Auto. Only experimented bug yet, fire effects glitches.
r7670 Windows 7 x64 Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.2GHz nVidia GeForce GTX 260 With CPU at stock 2.4GHz clock speed, unplayably slow regardless of configuration (constant stuttering, frame rates below 80%). At 3.2GHz OC, max frame rates even in OpenGL mode at 1920x1080 with 3x internal resolution. In retrospect, the GameCube's hardware couldn't do this game justice; when enhanced its graphics are stunning even by today's standards. Sesshy

^3.0 Windows XP x86 AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ @ 2.2GHz ATI Radeon X1600 After overclocking my CPU - a little bit - the game is more or less playable in DirectX9-Mode (19-26 FPS outdoors) at lowest settings (no anti-aliasing, almost all speed-hacks activated), though the framerate occasionally drops to ~16 FPS. Played the game for some hours now and only had one random crash. Also I don't need to check "fix item hang" to avoid black screens after video sequences (though Audio Throttle is enabled) dEnigma
^3.0 Windows 7 x86 AMD Turion II @ 2.2GHz Good. The game crash before some animations. Solution GAMEBOOSTER and turn off your antivirus. Ragen
^3.0 Linux x86_64 Mint Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.13GHz nVidia GeForce GT 430 Fully playable at 100% / 30 FPS with 1x native resolution. Most (>95%) areas playable at full speed with 2x resolution. Heat glitches occur, but can be worked around with the "free camera" hack. No crashes. Sound is almost perfect. Note: The game is totally unplayable (<10 FPS) on the same computer when using a x86 OS. scummos
^3.0 Mac OS X 10.7.3 Intel Core i5 @ 2.5GHz AMD Radeon HD 6630M Fully playable at full speed. Internal resolution at 2x native (1280x1056) and fullscreen resolution at 1920x1080. No glitches when playing at normal aspect ratio, but there are some pop-in issues at the edges when playing with the wide screen hack enabled. Otherwise flawless, and this game scales and runs beautifully.
^3.0 Windows 7 x64 Intel Core i5 @ 2.5GHz AMD Radeon HD Fully playable at full speed. Internal resolution at 2x native (1280x1056) and fullscreen resolution at 1920x1080. r7688 Windows 7 x64 Intel Core i5 @ 2.88GHz ATI Radeon HD 5850 Perfectly playable with DX11 plugin, at 4x native resolution with x8 Anti-Alias samples and x16 Anisotropic filtering samples. No bugs/glitches and runs at a stable framerate. ImpishRazor
r7689 Windows 7 x64 Intel Core i5-480M @ 2.67GHz nVidia GeForce 310M The game runs most of time at 30 FPS (sometimes in wide places or scenes with too much effects, it goes down to around 23 FPS). Almost perfect playable, but to reach a smooth play anti-aliasing can't be turned on. The fix item hang patch is needed to skip occasional black screens. To keep the audio working, the HLE DSP has to be used. Colorado Guilherme
r7719 Windows Vista x64 AMD Phenom II X4 840 @ 3.2GHz ATI Radeon HD 5700 30 FPS, 95-100% speed. Runs beautifully in terms of gameplay and graphics. Sound occasionally turns off except for link's footstep sfx. Simply unticking "Enable DTK Music" in the DSP menu will fix this. Sealion
r7719 Windows 7 x86 Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 @ 3GHz nVidia GeForce 8800 GT Perfectly, 100% with DX9 : 720p,16/9e Hack, with internal resolution 4x, anisotropic 16x, anti-aliasing 0x Sanitarium026
r7719 Windows 7 x64 Intel Core i5-2500K @ 3.2GHz nVidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti Almost perfect. DX9/DX11 in 1920x1080 fullscreen with 16/9 hack @ 4x Native. 2x AA is the best option for this game, although higher AA settings did not affect performance. Perfect 30 FPS at all times. Heat/Fire glitches have still not been rectified, occasional audio crackles/beeps. Using widescreen hack results in minor pop up issues on the sides of the screen extended by the hack. This is normal for a 4:3 native game. "Fix Item Hang" patch is no longer needed. Helvetica

4.0.1 Windows 7 X64 Intel i5-3570K @ 4.4GHz nVidia GeForce GTX 460 Near perfect emulation except ending has a bug that makes it so you can't 100% the game. AA does not work at all. Using OpenGL backend with widescreen hack and fire effect fix hack. Emulation accuracy is about 95% because of a few minor bugs that can't be fixed with hacks. Kilobytez95

4.0.2 Windows 8 x64 Intel Celeron Processor 1037U @ 1.33GHz Intel Integrated Graphics runs 15 FPS (is slow) most of the time. like when you're outside. if you're inside it'll speed up. runs the same speed in the dojo as if you were outside. audio setting has to be change from original settings to "openAL" with latency t 25-30 much needed change to the FPS while outside and in the dojo. PS I'm still in the beginning when i typed this if any altercations should arise will update. Zach Williams
4.0.2 Windows 7 x64 Intel Core i5-4570 @ 3.2GHz nVidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti Perfect performance across the board -- no slowdowns whatsoever. There are graphical flaws involving flames, but otherwise, the game didn't seem to have any noticeable glitches. Settings are Direct3D11, 2x native, 0xAA, 1xAF, JIT recompiler, and DSP HLE.
4.0.2 Windows 7 x64 Intel Core i7-4960X @ 4.6GHz nVidia GeForce 780 TI Just completed this game on Dolphin for the first time. Runs extremely well; 100% everywhere apart from some occasions when fighting large amounts of monsters at the same time, when it went down to 60% minimum (only for a split second or two), DX11, 8 x AA, 4 x Internal etc, some graphical glitches, fire doubling effect occurs on 4.0.2 so recommend downloading a newer revision to avoid this. Other graphic glitches include some odd lighting effects on armados monsters (concrete statue things with spikes on the bottom than spin around and explode when you kill them), Pictograph quest is slightly bugged as Lenzo will not recognize certain pictographs, take a look on Google for the solution for this; fully playable! 4.0-681 Windows 7 x64 Intel Core i7-860 @ 2.8GHz nVidia GeForce GTX 680 Fully playable in all areas in 1080p (Max settings) at 30 FPS with OpenGL plugin and Xaudio2 HLE DSP. With LLE DSP the game have huge slowdowns and became mostly unplayable, even with dumped DSP files from my Wii. Remember to modify GameSettings ini file to enable HLE DSP use for this game. Also used additional WideScreen Hack and Dragon Roost heat effect fix action replay codes from wiki page. GNU_Raziel
4.0-1624 Linux Ubuntu 14.04 x64 AMD A4-3300 @ 2.5GHz nVidia GeForce GT 63 *Driver~NVidia 331.38; With some tweaking, runs alright. Outdoors run about 17FPS, Indoors 28. Limiting FPS to 65 / Audio. Using ALSA audio backend, DSP LLE (included) TheFlagCourier
4.0-1720 Windows 7 x64 Intel Core i5-3570K @ 3.8GHz nVidia GeForce GTX 680 Runs flawlessly on 30 FPS with OpenGL at 4x Native resolution, 2x Anti-Aliasing and 4x Anisotropic Filtering. Minor lag at the beginning of the game (most likely objects being loaded) and during the water fountain eruption on Dragon Roost Island.
^4.0.2 Windows 7 x64 Intel Core i5-3470 @ 3.2GHz AMD Radeon HD 7770 Runs mostly at 30 FPS on 4x Resolution with the OpenGL backend, no anti-aliasing. Anisotropic filtering gave a slight slowdown with no visual difference. Graphics had to be cranked down in some areas, presumably caused by the wide array of particle effects on screen or because of how many objects were on screen (ex: windfall island). Widescreen achieved with the above AR code. Fire effect partly fixed with the other above AR code. Fire doubling fixed with above texture. Hackapell2013
4.0-2103 Windows 8.1 x64 Intel Core i7-4700MQ @ 2.4GHz Intel HD Graphics 4600 Full speed throughout, sometimes with minor slowdowns, using both DirectX and OpenGL running at 1366x768, with 16x anisotropic filtering and no anti-aliasing. Widescreen causes more slowdowns, but remains more or less full speed. Sound is DSP LLE recompiler with DirectSound backend. snesiscool
