When there are a lot of audio effects happening concurrently the framerate tends to dip which causes distortion in the audio.  If you set your audio backend to OpenAL and increase the framebuffer to anywhere between 1-5 then the audio will be less likely to distort when your framerate drops.  It does not prevent framerate dips but it does combat audio crackling when the framerate does dip.
