Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the third installment in the Super Smash Bros. series of crossover fighting games, developed by an ad hoc development team consisting of Sora, Game Arts and staff from other developers and published by Nintendo for the Wii video game console. Brawl was announced at a pre-E3 2005 press conference by Nintendo president and Chief Executive Officer Satoru Iwata. Masahiro Sakurai, director of the previous two games in the series, assumed the role of director for the third installment at the request of Iwata. Game development began in October 2005 with a creative team that included members from several Nintendo and third party development teams. After delays due to development problems, the game was finally released on January 31, 2008 in Japan, March 9, 2008 in North America, June 26, 2008 in Australia and June 27, 2008 in Europe. Twenty-seven months after its original Japanese release, the game was released in Korea, on April 29, 2010.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl, known in Japan as Dairantō Sumasshu Burazāzu Ekkusu (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズX), often abbreviated as SSBB or simply as Brawl, is the third installment in the Super Smash Bros. series of crossover fighting games, developed by an ad hoc development team consisting of Sora, Game Arts, and staff from other developers, and published by Nintendo for the Wii video game console.

Like its predecessors, the object of Brawl is to knock an opponent off the screen. It features a greatly expanded single-player mode known as The Subspace Emissary (SSE). This mode is a plot-driven, side-scrolling beat 'em up featuring FMV cutscenes and playable characters from the game. Like all Smash games, Brawl supports multiplayer battles with up to four combatants, but it is the first game of its franchise to feature online battles, via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

SDHC Cards
Support for Virtual SDHC cards (4-32GiB in size) was added in 5.0-5044, solving 8823. See here for help with creating a virtual SDHC card. The SDHC Extension 1.1[Bero] code needs to be included in your GCT file found within sd.raw's \codes folder.

It is recommended to use build 5.0-5821 or later to avoid 10636.

Both 10461 and 10514 are known to affect SD emulation and are more prominent when using a virtual SDHC card.

Subspace Emissary Videos
Many disc images of this game are DVD5 (4.7 GB) altered versions of the original DVD9 (8.5 GB) release. In these most of the videos are removed, resulting in black screens or the same video being repeated all the time when playing the Subspace Emissary. Following these videos, the character select screen may appear; however the names represent the characters for the next level. Dolphin cannot fix this problem; the only solution is to rip a full unaltered ISO.
<!-- According to our conventions, problems not related to Dolphin shouldn't be in the problems area. This is an exception however since people thought it was Dolphin's fault and kept asking about it. This was added to cut down on that. -->

WiiConnect24 / RiiConnect24
The WiiConnect24/RiiConnect24 features of this title cannot be used because Dolphin does not currently support them. Refer 10200.

Graphics
Black Background in Off-Screen Hoop
*The post battle stats are corrupt, refer 2697 and 803. In random cases, the credits screen (after beating classic mode) may suffer from the same issue. Names above characters during matches are also corrupted. Set EFB Copies to Ram to fix it.
When a character goes off-screen, it will display the character in a hoop, but the background is black. To fix, turn off Store EFB Copies to Texture Only.

Audio
Saving Screenshots
Audio randomly crackles and feeds-back when using the DSP HLE audio engine. The error is random, and its severity depends on the specific revision. Use the DSP LLE audio engine to avoid this. Note: DSP LLE requires a dumped DSP bios from a physical console. Instructions are on this forum thread The music glitches will always end when a new music track is played; so any music problems encountered will end with the current fight, when leaving the menus, or when playing another track in the sound test.
Taking a screenshot from the pause menu will produce a garbled mess or black. To fix, turn off EFB Copies to Texture Only.
SSBB Corrupt screenshot.png

Controls
Classic Mode Rectangle
Brawl is capable of using both GameCube controllers and Wii Remotes at the same time. If you have a physical controller set to emulate both a GC Pad and a Wii Remote concurrently both inputs will be used and will operate both player 1 and player 2 at the same time. To fix, disable one of the emulated controllers or move one of them to a second physical controller.
After winning a stage in classic mode, the game is supposed to zoom in on the character, and then partition them off into a rectangle with the game stats around them. See 2828. Enabling Real XFB (before 5.0-5874) or disabling Store XFB Copies to Texture Only (starting with 5.0-5874) fixes the issue.

Subspace Emissary Videos
<s>NES Masterpieces</s>
Many disc images of this game are DVD5 (4.7 GB) altered versions of the original DVD9 (8.5 GB) release. In these most of the videos are removed, resulting in black screens or the same video being repeated all the time when playing the Subspace Emissary. Following these videos, the character select screen may appear; however the names represent the characters for the next level. Dolphin cannot fix this problem; the only solution is to use a full unaltered ISO (Dual Layer Disc, 8.5 GB).
Store EFB Copies to Texture Only needs to be turned off because a black screen will show instead of the game. Fixed since 5.0-4896.

Master Pieces
<s>NES and SNES Masterpieces</s>
Attempting to load a Master Piece will freeze the emulator, showing nothing but a black screen with FPS 0, VPS 60, and Speed 100%. This is caused by Dolphin not supporting in game soft resets. Metroid Prime: Trilogy also has this issue.
Texture Cache Accuracy needs to be set to Safe because sometimes the game will fail to update its frames. Fixed since 5.0-4896.

Cutscenes
<s>"With Friends" Menu Problems </s>
Sometimes cutscenes are very slow, even if dolphin shows 60fps and the gamespeed at 100%.
After connecting to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, when you enter into "Brawl", "Friend roster", "Team Multi-Man Brawl", or "Home-Run Contest" sub-menus the game will suddenly drop to 1-5FPS and display <var>Src\PixelEngine.cpp:193 W[PE]: (r16) ALPHAREAD</var> errors in the Log. This is due to a known slow/problematic codepath, and can be avoided by enabling Skip EFB access from CPU. This error only appears when interacting with Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection menus. See 6553. Fixed in 5.0-9638.

Homebrew
<s>Saves Not Working</s>
Moveset swaps don't seem to work, crashing the emulator on the character selection screen or when a character is chosen.
On rare occasions the game will create a save but be unable to read or write to it. The exact reason why this happens is unknown. The save file is now corrupted. It should be deleted and recreated:
* Right click on the game from Dolphin game list and select "Open Wii save folder".
* Delete the contents within the \data\ folder.
* Restart the game. Normally it should take several seconds to create a new save file.
Fixed since at least 5.0-10516.

Stability without Unlimited JIT cache
Requires "File Patch Code". See the section below.
The game may crash during classic mode, during battles vs. a 10-man team. This can be fixed enabling Unlimited JIT Cache in older revisions (newer revisions has a built-in patch to this issue).

<s>Broken Revisions</s>
HD Texture Pack
In 7476 a "WriteARAM" change was made that inadvertently breaks Super Smash Bros Brawl. When the game is launched, it immediately freezes with the message "Please Insert Super Smash Bros. Game Disc". The problem was fixed in 7482.
Super Smash Bros. HD Retexture Project forum thread

Modding
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is unusually moddable for a console game. The gecko code "File Patch Code" created by Phantom Wings can read fan-made patches from an SD card on top of Brawl's on-disc data. These patches range from simple character skins and balance adjustments to more complex modifications such as additional characters and extra stages more complex than the Brawl's Stage Builder allows.

Dolphin can virtualize a SD card, which is necessary for Brawl mods; Virtual SD Card Guide provides a tutorial for this.

A regression introduced in 5.0-2712 may cause gecko code mods to not load properly. This was fixed by 5.0-3301. See 10187.

Netplay Patch
There are multiple revisions of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but the online community seems to prefer revision 1. The patch linked below can downgrade a revision 2 disc (MD5: 52ce7160ced2505ad5e397477d0ea4fe) to revision 1 (MD5: d18726e6dfdc8bdbdad540b561051087). Download the Revision 2 downgrade (71.7MB) and use the included patcher to revise revision 2 images to revision 1.
