P.N.03, short for Product Number Zero Three, is a 2003 third-person shooter video game developed and published by Capcom for the Nintendo GameCube. Its protagonist, a mercenary named Vanessa Z. Schneider, fights an army of berserk robots in a space colony compound. Vanessa wears special body suits that provide offensive capabilities such as shooting and explosive area-attacks.
Emulation Information
Banding
There is notable banding in indoor areas of P.N.03. Despite appearances, this is in fact accurate emulation, as this banding also occurs on console. It's just harder to see on the original hardware due to factors such as the strong dither, the low resolution, and fuzziness from analog video (especially if captured over composite).
Unlike Luigi's Mansion, 5.0-20849 does not allow Force 24-bit Color to remove this banding. There is currently no known way to remove the banding in current Dolphin versions. However, Per-Pixel Lighting makes it worse.
Versions of Dolphin prior to 4.0-1192 did not exhibit P.N.03's banding. This was inaccurate, but it could be considered an enhancement. However, 4.0-1192 corrected a major inaccuracy in how Dolphin emulated the GameCube and Wii's graphics, solving tens of thousands of bugs in the process. If you revisit P.N.03 in such old versions to play it with this inaccurate behavior, you will experience additional bugs and issues that are solved in current versions of Dolphin. Proceed with caution.
Problems
Dither
P.N.03 has a strong dither effect that is always on screen. This is a part of the game's visual identity, and it helps the game hide visual quirks such as its banding. Dolphin's hardware backends currently do not emulate this dither correctly, with a much weaker dither than on console. Refer to issue 13630 for details.
Note that Force 24-bit Color disables all dithering in Dolphin; that setting must be off to see this dither effect at all.
Intro Cutscene Audio Desync
The audio lags behind the video in the "new game" cutscene. The easiest place to see it is at the first laser blast at 1:00. The audio is synced up again in the "radio" dialogue that follows.
Enhancements
Smoother vent textures
Turn on Force Texture Filtering to smooth out jagged rendering of "vent" textures.
