Luigi's Mansion is an action-adventure game developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo GameCube. It was released in Japan on September 14, 2001, in North America on November 17, 2001, and in Europe on May 3, 2002. The game was a launch title for the GameCube. This was one of the very few games where Luigi was the main character, not Mario.
The game takes place in a haunted mansion, which Luigi won in a contest he did not enter. He told his brother to meet him there to celebrate his victory. Luigi is searching for his brother Mario, who came to the mansion earlier, but went missing. To help Luigi on his quest, an old professor named Elvin Gadd has equipped him with the "Poltergust 3000", a vacuum cleaner used for capturing ghosts, and a "Game Boy Horror", a device used for communicating with Gadd.
Luigi's Mansion was relatively well-received by reviewers, despite being criticized for its short length. The game has sold over 2.5 million copies, and is the fifth best-selling Nintendo GameCube game in the United States. It was one of the first games to be re-released as a Player's Choice title on the system. A sequel, Luigi's Mansion 2, was announced at E3 2011 for the Nintendo 3DS.
Problems
No Shadows
Shadows are missing, significantly reducing the ambiance of many scenes. See issue 4674
OpenGL Plug-in
Use of the OpenGL plug-in on r6658 results in a crash post the initial menu screen.
Black Screen
At the beginning of the game, when going upstairs in the dark and going through the next room, the screen might go black and also show silhouette of characters on some hardware. It seems to be fixed in r6706. See also issue 1985. (Please also update DirectX.)
Sound Problems
Constant slight crackling may occur in the background and when enemies and friends make noises. Use DSP LLE to fix them.
M4A Video Codec
Support of the M4A codec required to play the Pikmin movie trailer under options is currently working, but it requires DX9 and DSP-LLE.
Configuration
Only configuration options for the best compatibility where they deviate from defaults are listed.
Graphics
Config | Setting | Notes |
---|---|---|
Video Backend | DX9 or DX11 | OpenGL crashes post initial menu. |

r7687 | Windows 7 x64 | AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400 @ 2.2GHz | nVidia GeForce GT 440 | Nearly perfect, OpenGL and DX11 work with less performance but better image quality. | Endres |
3.0-221 | Windows 7 X64 | Intel Core i7-2620M @ 2.7GHz | Intel HD 3000 | Close to perfect. Do not run in DX9 or OpenGL for it will crash or have black-screen. Running at 720P at 30fps consistently. No hitches with game play but use DX11 for Intel HD Graphics. No slowing down during boss fights either. Also running on a laptop. | cohn |
3.0-235 | Windows 7 x64 | AMD Phenom II x6 @ 3.2GHz | AMD Radeon HD 5750 | Perfect, but normal settings caused weird graphical problems. The screen seemed to have purple EFB problems. Disabling EFB turned them black. Checking "Ignore Format Changes" got rid of them. | |
^3.0-151 | Windows Vista x86 | Intel Pentium P6100 @ 2GHz | Intel HD graphics | Works normally and fully playable but the graphics is all pixelated. To get a rid from the pixels is needed to change the resolution to 1280x720. | |
3.0-751 | Windows 7 x64 | AMD Athlon II X4 645 @ 3.1GHz | AMD Radeon HD 6570 | Fully playable; Runs perfectly at 30 FPS throughout the whole game with DX9. | |
3.0-758 | Windows 7 x86 | AMD Athlon II 4X 635 @ 3.0 GHZ | nVidia GeForce GTX 480 | No slowdowns and emulates perfectly @ 4X AA, 16X AA, 1920x1080 widescreen. | ALLEN2 |
